Vehicle Registration in Cambodia
All vehicles in Cambodia must be registered with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT). This guide covers registration requirements, ownership transfers, and what foreigners need to know.
Foreigners and Vehicle Ownership
Foreigners CAN own vehicles in Cambodia. The registration will be in your name with your passport number.
Requirements:
- Valid visa (EB visa recommended for long-term)
- Passport copy
- Certificate of Residence from your local Sangkat
- Purchase contract or proof of ownership
- Tax payment receipt
Buying a Used Vehicle
When purchasing a vehicle, ensure:
- Clear Title: The seller's name matches the registration card
- No Outstanding Tax: Check the sticker date
- Transfer Papers: Complete ownership transfer at MPWT
- Police Check: Some buyers verify the vehicle isn't stolen
Transfer Process
- Buyer and seller visit MPWT together
- Present both IDs and vehicle documents
- Pay transfer fee (~$50-100 depending on vehicle)
- Receive updated registration in buyer's name
